ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Junior guard
Ashley Lutz scored 14 points and grabbed four steals in what was an otherwise rough evening for the Eckerd Tritons (5-7, 0-4 SSC) as they lost to the 17th-ranked Tampa Spartans (14-2, 4-1 SSC), 72-48, on Wednesday at the McArthur Center.
After
Jordan Stacey hit a three to give the Tritons a 3-2 lead, the Spartans would go on a 20-5 run, sparked by a conventional three-point play converted by Tiara Cook, and never look back, leading 37-14 at the half.
It was much of the same in the second half as the Spartans maintained a 24-point lead, accounting for the final score.
For the game, Eckerd was held to 31 percent shooting from the field while Tampa shot 42 percent. The Spartans also out-rebounded the Tritons, 45-32.
Taylor Young added 10 points to the Tritons' total while Gianna Messina and Tiara Cook scored 22 and 20 points, respectively, to lead Tampa.
Eckerd will return to the hardwood on Saturday, January 16 as it hosts Florida Tech at 2pm.
