ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Tampa senior defender Dan Ingvarsson registered two second half goals and an assist to push the second-ranked Tampa Spartans (10-0-1, 4-0 SSC) past the Eckerd Tritons (5-7, 3-3 SSC) on Tuesday evening at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Tampa struck early as Domenic Goncalves took a shot in the seventh minute after a pass from Ryan Griffin to put the Spartans ahead 1-0. Eckerd tied the game 11 minutes later when
Anthony Arico took advantage of a loose ball after
Alex Patterson made a touch on a
Colin Kuhn corner kick. The momentum of Arico's equalizer was short-lived, however, as Ryan Griffin found the back of the net in the 24th minute.
Ahead 2-1, the Spartans never relaxed as Ingvarsson took advantage of a pair of favorable calls by the referee. In the 50th minute, Tampa was awarded a direct free kick from about 22 yards out that was taken by Ingvarsson who deposited the kick in the top left corner of the goal. In the 59th minute, Eckerd was whistled for a handball inside the 18-yard box. Ingvarsson was stoned on the penalty kick by
Domenic Spedaliere but pushed the rebound past the Eckerd keeper. For Spedaliere, it was the second penalty kick he saved in as many contests.
For the game, Tampa goalkeeper Ryan Thompson made seven saves while Spedaliere made four. Tampa out-shot Eckerd 18-12 while the Tritons held an 8-4 corner kick advantage.
Eckerd will return to action on Sunday, October 18 as it travels to Boca Raton, Fla. to face the Lynn Fighting Knights at 3pm.
