Eckerd Baseball Tours Cuba Following Season

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - After wrapping up the 2018 season in early May, the Eckerd baseball team stayed together a little longer.

The Tritons took a seven-day trip to Cuba as part of a summer course called Business and Baseball in Cuba.

While the team did not compete, it still had the once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn about history of baseball in the country, watch several teams practice, and immerse itself in Cuba's culture.

One of the stops along the way was the Cuba Baseball Hall of Fame.  They had the opportunity to meet Cuban baseball legend Wilfredo Sanchez, who amassed 2174 hits as a member of the Cuban National Team while leading them to numerous gold medals.

The team also toured Havana and Matanzas and visited Victoria de Giron Stadium, home of the Matanzas Crocodiles.

"I believe our team got a lot out of the trip," said EC head coach Josh Beauregard.  "We had an opportunity to meet and engage with baseball players who love to play the game, meeting a lot of interesting people, and see a whole new culture."
