Kellen Bernard '06 returned to his alma mater as the Head Sailing Coach in August 2021. He enters his second season at the help for the 2022-23 campaign.
In his first season, Bernard led the Tritons to seven top-three finishes, including two victories. The season also saw freshman Eden Nykamp named to the All-SAISA Second Team for Women's Skippers.
Bernard comes back to Eckerd after serving several stints witin the club sailing sector. In the summer of 2021, he served as a sailing instructor at J World Annapolis in Maryland, where he worked with keelboat, performance sailing, and J80s.
Prior to his role at J World, Bernard spent over two years as the head coach of Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis, Maryland, where he coached the high school sailing program for the club.
Additionally, he spent one year as a sailing instructor at the United States Naval Academy instructing the incoming Midshipmen.
He also served as the JV Sailing Head Coach and Varsity Sailing Assistant Coach at the Severn School (Md.) from 2018-19, Varsity Sailing Coach at Saints Peter and Paul High School from 2017-18, and the Director of Junior Sailing at Tred Avon Yacht Club (Md.) in 2017.
An accomplished sailor, Bernard was a two-year captain at Eckerd while competing in both the ICSA Fleet and Team Racing Championships in 2004 and 2005.
Bernard obtained his bachelor's degree in communication from Eckerd in 2006.
