ST. PETERSBURG – Hannah Taylor hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning in Saturday's opening game of a doubleheader to lift the Eckerd softball team to a 4-2 win over the No. 1 ranked Saint Leo Lions. The victory snapped the Lions' 38-game winning streak and handed them their first defeat since February 13.
Eckerd loaded the bases in the opening inning and scratched one across on an
Abby Lucas sacrifice fly to put the Tritons up by a run early on. The 1-0 score marked the first time since April 11 Saint Leo had trailed in a game. The advantage did not last long as the visitors pushed one across in the second before taking a lead of their own with another in the fourth.
In the bottom half of the fourth, the Tritons evened the score with another sac fly, this time coming from
Hannah Taylor. Each team worked around a base runner in the fifth to keep the score knotted at two entering the sixth.
During the Tritons' at-bat in the bottom of the sixth,
Lex Difato reached base with a one-out single. After seeing a pair of pitches outside the strike zone, Taylor blasted a two-run home run to left-center to move the team out in front by a score of 4-2.
Brandilyn Reymer struck out two of the three batters she faced in a quick seventh to seal the victory. In total, she fanned nine to pick up her 21st victory of the season.
Saint Leo claimed game two in six innings by a score of 12-1 to clinch the series win.
Kinsley Castro had the lone RBI for the Tritons.
