Baseball wins finale over Purdue Northwest

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons baseball team won the finale of a two-game series against the Purdue Northwest Pride on Wednesday by a score of 8-1.

Carson Womer made his first appearance of the season on the mound for the Tritons and pitched a three-up, three-down opening inning with a pair of strikeouts. Eckerd tallied its first run in the bottom half, sending one across home plate on an RBI double from Kam Gelwick. The Tritons held onto their 1-0 lead through the next two innings and into the fourth.

Eckerd pulled away with four runs in the fourth inning, all coming after two outs. With a runner on and two down, Joey Bazydlo extended the inning with a single that got through the left side to put runners on the corners. Ean Gimson delivered a run-scoring hit to make it a 2-0 contest before Hunter Rebhan cleared the bases two batters later to extend the cushion out to five. Rebhan collected his fourth RBI later in the game in the sixth to bring the Eckerd advantage to 6-1.

Purdue Northwest earned its lone run in the top of the seventh inning, but the Tritons added two insurance runs without the benefit of a hit in the bottom half of the eighth. Two walks, two errors, a wild pitch, and a hit batter helped stretch Eckerd's lead out to seven, eventually resulting in the 8-1 final.

The Tritons posted 10 hits in the win, led by two apiece from Rebhan and Gelwick. Rebhan led all hitters with four runs driven in. Xavier Brown notched the victory on the mound after going 4.1 innings in relief and allowing just two hits.

Eckerd will dive back into conference play this weekend at Florida Southern.
