DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons softball picked up another pair of wins over the Embry-Riddle Eagles on Saturday to complete a three-game sweep, winning the first game in extra innings by a score of 4-1 before taking the finale by run rule by a final of 9-1.
Fresh off their first-ever victory on the road over Embry-Riddle in program history, the Tritons used a three-run eighth inning to secure the opener on Saturday. The two teams played scoreless through the first three innings until Eckerd struck first in the top of the fourth.
Ella Coiner began the frame with a leadoff triple and came in to score during the next at-bat on a passed ball. Embry-Riddle earned one back in the bottom half to make it a 1-1 game entering the fifth. The Tritons had a pair of base runners in scoring position in the fifth, but were unable to drive them in to keep the game tied.
Elise Roy allowed just one base runner through the final three innings and the team took the 1-1 score into the eighth.
In the extra frame, Eckerd sent three across home plate, beginning with a two-run home run by
Faith Wharton to give the team the lead. After consecutive flyouts, the Tritons saw three straight batters reach base, with
Gracie Ciccarello's RBI single extending the advantage to 4-1. Roy went three-up, three-down in the bottom half to seal the win.
Coiner went 3-for-4 in the win, while Ciccarello also added two knocks. Roy allowed just five hits and did not walk a batter in her eight innings of work.Â
In game two, both teams were held scoreless in the opening inning before the Tritons erupted for six runs in the second.
Jazz Jones started things off with a leadoff double and was brought in to score on a
Kaili Cannon single during the ensuing at-bat. Following two walks to load the bases,
Hannah Taylor sent in two more to make it a 4-0 game. Coiner delivered her second triple of the afternoon and scored on an error to cap off the six-run outburst.Â
The Eagles earned one back in the third and the teams followed with scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth. Coiner's three-run home run in the sixth moved Eckerd into run-rule territory, and
Brandilyn Reymer worked around a leadoff hit batter in the bottom half to end the game one inning early.Â
Coiner finished 2-for-4 in the win with four RBI, while Taylor also contributed three hits. Reymer struck out eight on her way to her sixth win of the season.
The Tritons will return home for a series against Nova Southeastern next weekend.
