Eckerd announces men's and women's track as College's 17th and 18th sports

ST. PETERSBURG -- Eckerd College Athletics is pleased to announce the addition of men's and women's track, bumping the total number of NCAA-sponsored sports up to 18.

"Men's and women's track provides new opportunities for student-athletes, while building upon the foundation of our cross country program," Director of Athletics Tom Ryan '87 said. "This move reflects our continued commitment to enhancing the student-athlete experience."

The Tritons will gear up to compete in one indoor track meet and seven outdoor meets this upcoming spring, including their first visit to the Sunshine State Conference Championships on April 24-25. Eckerd will send student-athletes to compete in both mid-distance and distance events, and will actively recruit student-athletes in these areas.

"The addition of track is very exciting for us," said head coach Aaron King. "This allows our team to be even more thrilled about their spring semester of training. Competing is what it's all about, so adding in a full season of racing gives us the opportunity to continue doing what we love. Shout out to Eckerd College and Athletic Director Tom Ryan for the green light to get this going. It is a big step in developing our cross Country and track programs."

Eckerd will participate in its first meet on Friday, Feb. 6 for the Visit Gainesville Indoor Classic. The team will then begin outdoor season at the Spartans Open on Feb. 21 at Tampa.
