Men's soccer drops conference opener at Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons men's soccer team fell in its conference opener on Saturday to the Barry Buccaneers by a score of 2-1.

The Tritons struck first less than minutes into the contest, seeing their first shot of the game hit the back of the net on a Noah Fuhrmann strike. The Bucs answered less than 10 minutes later with the equalizing tally and the 1-1 score remained intact through halftime. Barry doubled up Eckerd in shots in the opening 45 minute with a 6-3 advantage, while each team collected a save in the frame.

After 10 combined shots and over 30 minutes of scoreless action to begin the second half, Barry went ahead in the 79th minute to make it a 2-1 game. The Tritons followed the tally with three straight shots over the course of the next 10 minutes, but all three fell off the mark. Eckerd earned a penalty kick opportunity in the 87th minute, but an unsuccessful try kept the score at 2-1 before Barry ran out the clock to seal the win.

The two teams combined for 15 shots in the second half, with the Tritons sending off eight to the Bucs' seven. Duran Van Woerkom notched five saves for the Tritons in net.

With the loss, Eckerd drops to 2-3-2 on the season. The team will return home to host No. 7 Nova Southeastern next Saturday.
