ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd men's tennis team swept the West Chester (Pa.) Golden Rams at their senior day match at the Bullard Courts on Sunday morning.
Eckerd (7-2) swept the doubles point and all six singles positions to continue their five-match winning streak.
Adrian Gheorghe and Marshall Hulett shutout their opponents with a 6-0 finish. Eric Asakura and Lukas Palla, in the No. 3 position, grabbed a win against the Golden Rams opponents, 6-2. To complete the sweep, Eckerd's top pairing of Batu Ataseven and Mario Kirkov finished last, topping their opponent 6-3.
The Tritons secured the sweep by taking all six singles matches. Ataseven defeated his opponent in a swift two sets, 6-2, 6-0. Kirkov secured a two-set victory in the No. 2 spot 6-1, 6-2. Asakura put up a hard fight to secure the victory over his opponent, 7-5, 6-2. Hulett, in the No. 4 position, battled through three sets to clinch the match for the Tritons, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7. In the No. 5 spot, Gheorghe shutout his opponent in the first set 6-0 and grabbed the second set with a 6-1 finish. Phil Grueninger defeated his opponent with a well-fought first-set victory 7-6 (7-4) and a 6-4 finish in the second set to secure the senior day sweep over the Golden Rams.
Eckerd returns to action on Tuesday, March 11, against Jefferson (Pa.) at the Fred Bullard Courts.
