ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd baseball team dropped the series opener against Barry Friday night at the Turley Athletic Complex, 8-3.
Barry took an early lead in the first inning when Jimm Bruno reached on a single and later scored on a throwing error. Despite Luis Garrido doubling to lead off the bottom half, Eckerd was unable to capitalize. In the second inning, Barry extended its advantage with a pair of unearned runs. Eckerd threatened with two runners on in the bottom of the frame, but a lineout double play ended the inning.

Barry responded in the fourth with an RBI double from Noriega to push their lead to 4-1. The Buccaneers added insurance in the sixth, scoring twice on a throwing error after Diaz's single, making it 6-1. Eckerd answered with a run of their own in the bottom half when Cole Schumaker singled to drive in Kam Gelwick.
In the seventh, Barry tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly from Segura. Eckerd responded as Garrido was hit by a pitch, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout by Stark, narrowing the gap to 7-3. Barry added an extra run in the eighth on a groundout RBI from Joe Wike. Eckerd's last scoring opportunity came in the ninth, but Barry's reliever, Ewe, shut the door with a strikeout to secure Barry's 8-3 victory.
