ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd baseball team fell to No. 1 Tampa 18-3 on Friday afternoon at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Eckerd began the game strong defensively with a 1-2-3 inning in the first. Tampa, however, got on the board first with a solo homerun in the second for the 1-0 lead.
With runners on the corners, and two out in the third, Eckerd had a chance to equalize before Canney closed the inning for Tampa without any damage. The Spartans grew their lead in the fourth, with a two-run double down the left line for a 3-0 favor.
Eckerd made it on the board with a sacrifice fly by Cam Collier in the fifth. With runners in scoring position, Reid Lisle hit an RBI single to right field to shrink the deficit to one, 3-2.
The Spartans took back their three-run lead in the sixth with a two-run knock to right field to lead 5-2. Tampa added three more runs, including a two-run homerun for the 8-2 lead. An RBI single by Bradley White in the bottom of the frame brought Eckerd's tally to three.
Tampa grabbed double-digits in the seventh with four runs. They added two more runs in the eighth before another four in the ninth to close the game 18-3.
