ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A late run by Ella Coiner in the sixth forced extra innings, before the Eckerd softball team fell 3-1 in the series opener against Barry in nine innings at the Turley Athletic Complex Friday night.
Barry was on the board early with an unearned run in the first. Five scoreless innings of play ensued before the Tritons equalized in the bottom of the sixth. An errant throw by the Bucs third baseman allowed Coiner extra bases and was in scoring position with no outs. An RBI single to center by Lauren Margolis brought Coiner home to knot the game at one.
With the ballgame still tied at one, Eckerd had a chance to walk it off in the seventh with runners on first and second. Two quick outs by the Bucs forced the game to extras. The Bucs scored two runs in the ninth for a 3-1 lead. Eckerd could not complete the comeback, falling short 3-1.
