ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd baseball team suffered a pair of losses to close the series against Columbus State (Ga.), falling 26-12 and 9-2 at the Turley Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars were on the board early with a run in the first inning of the opener. They scored another three runs in the fourth, for a 4-0 favor. Columbus State exploded with 11 runs in the top of the sixth. Eckerd rallied with nine runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to narrow the deficit to 15-9. Tyler Young hit a two-RBI double to left field in the frame.Â
Eckerd added another two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within four. However, Columbus State added another five runs in the top of the eighth to bring their game tally to 20. Joe Wike hit a homerun over the left field fence in the bottom of the eighth for the Tritons' last score of the game. The Cougars added six more in the ninth for extra insurance to close the game 26-12.Â
Game two began in a similar fashion, with the Cougars placing themselves on the board in the first inning with a two-run homerun. They added another run in each of the following three innings for a 5-0 favor. Young picked up his third RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to bring home Cam Collier for Eckerd's first run of the game. Tyler Cox singled to right field to bring home Bradley White in the bottom of the fifth for the Tritons to trail 5-2. Columbus State ran away with the game, scoring another run in the seventh, and three more in the eighth for Eckerd to fall 9-2.Â
