SAINT LEO, Fla. - Bolstered by a 13 run third inning, the Eckerd baseball team's bats exploded for 17 hits and a season-high 16 runs in a 16-4 nonconference victory over Saint Leo Tuesday night at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
After a quiet opening two frames, Eckerd's bats erupted for 13 runs in the third inning. Dimerson Nunez opened the scoring with an RBI double, followed by a two-run single from Tyler Cox. Jake Andriole, Danny Gutcher, and Mikey Burke added RBI singles in the inning. Nunez and Michael Ballard added two more runs with RBIs on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and an error before Mitch Donofrio cleared the bases with a grand slam.
SLU added two runs in the third before the two teams went quiet over the subsequent five frames. EC added three insurance runs over the last two frames while the Lions plated two in the ninth.
