Pair of Homeruns Propels Eckerd Over Northwood

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.Mitch Donofrio and Santos Grande each hit a two-run homerun to fuel the Triton offense as the Eckerd baseball team topped Northwood (Mich.), 5-2, Thursday night at the Turley Athletic Complex.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Eckerd took an early lead thanks to a two-run homer blasted to right center by Santos Grande in the opening frame.
  • Sam Cochrane led off the third inning with an infield single to second. He advanced to third on a stolen base and a flyout before scoring on Mikey Burke's single through the left side.
  • The Timberwolves pulled within one in the fifth inning as Kyle Ziegler hit a two-run single up the middle.
  • Grande led off the bottom of the inning with a double to centerfield and Mitch Donofrio quickly brought him in with a homerun smacked to right center to give EC a 5-2 lead.
  • The Timberwolves managed to get a runner to third in the eight but were unable to push him across while Chase Achuff shut the door in the ninth for EC.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Grande led Eckerd going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. His three hits were all extra-base hits as he had two doubles and a homerun.
  • Cochrane and Donofrio each collected a pair of hits.
  • Donofrio's homerun in the fifth was his fifth homerun in three games.
  • Justin Carrillo collected his first win of the season, throwing two hitless innings.
  • Achuff earned his fifth save of the season. The save was the 12th of his career, which moves him into second in program history.
