Triton Title Tuesday: Men's Basketball 2003-04

Join us each Tuesday over the Fall semester as we reflect on each of our Sunshine State Conference Championships.

Eckerd claimed its 15th Sunshine State Conference Championship in 2003-04 as men's basketball defeated Florida Southern, 67-57, in the tournament championship. It was the Tritons' second tournament crown in program history.

EC earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament and edged Barry, 48-45, in the opening round before winning a tight game over top-seeded Rollins, 75-73.

In the championship game, Steve Berg led the team with 21 points and three steals. Sharrod McCree and Marcus Bryant rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively. McCree grabbed three steals as well, while Bryant led the team with nine rebounds.

Berg was named the SSC Tournament Most Valuable Player, averaging 15.0 points per game in the tournament. Anthony Washington was selected to the All-Tournament team following an average of 13.0 points and 6.7 rebounds over the three games.

Eckerd earned its sixth trip to the National stage as the No. 6 seed traveling to Valdosta, Ga., looking to echo their performance from the year prior, where they claimed the regional championship.

The Tritons topped Florida Southern, 70-62, in the South Regional opening round before falling to Rollins, 77-54, the next day.

EC finished the season 21-11 and 8-6 in SSC play. The Tritons ranked 16th in the country in defensive field-goal percentage, holding their opponents to shooting at a 40.3 percent clip.

During the season, Bryant led the team averaging 13.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Washington and McCree followed behind with 11.7 and 11.5 points per game.

Bryant was also named to the All-SSC Second Team.
