Klausen's Goal Enough to Lift Eckerd to Victory on Opening Night

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A Frederik Klausen goal in the waning moments of the first half was enough to give the Eckerd men's soccer team a 1-0 season-opening win over Florida College at Johnson Field on a muggy South Florida night.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 1, Florida College 0
Scoring Summary: EC - Klausen 45' (Reinauer, Willetts)
Records: Eckerd 1-0; FC 1-2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Most of the first half was a defensive struggle. After a pair of early chances for the Tritons, neither team created much on the attacking end. The Falcons managed only one shot in the first 45 minutes, a Krist Berisha attempt that was stopped by David Ormiston.
  • Eckerd earned its fourth corner kick of the match with less than a minute to play in the first half and turned it into the lone goal of the match. Jake Willetts drove the ball to the top left of the box where Nick Reinauer volleyed it toward the right post to the feet of Klausen, who deftly back-heeled the pass into the net.
  • The second half featured more attacking opportunities for both teams, though neither converted. The Falcons had their best chance come in the 59th minute, rifling back-to-back shots from close range. Ormiston made a spectacular save on the first attempt, and the shot off the rebound was cleared by the Triton defense.
  • The Tritons generated several chances in the final 45 minutes but didn't add to their lead. FC keeper Anton Richards was a factor in that as he made diving saves on set pieces from Nick Reinauer and Agustin Pertusso.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Klausen's goal in his first Eckerd match marked the third time in the last four years for a Triton to score a goal in his first match. Pedro Galvao did last year while Robert Labus and Moritz Hanneman both scored in their first EC contests in 2016.
  • The Tritons are 6-1 in their last seven season openers.
  • Ormiston's clean sheet was the second of his Eckerd career.
  • EC held a 19-7 edge in shots, taking 14 shots in the second half alone.
