CLEVELAND, Miss. - Moments after building a 5-0 lead, the Eckerd baseball team soon found itself facing elimination in the NCAA SOuth Region Tournament.
Embry-Riddle scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to turn Eckerd's lead into an 8-5 deficit.
But the Tritons, who have exhibited a bit of a flair for the dramatic throughout this historic season, used a trio of homeruns and another outstanding relief appearance from
Chase Achuff to stay alive via a come-from-behind victory.
Nick Conti and
Justin Glover each hit solo homeruns in the sixth and seventh innings respectively before
Sam Cochrane launched a three-run shot to right field in the eighth inning that ultimately decided the game.
It wasn't the first time Cochrane broke the backs of the Eagles. In the regular season series in Daytona Beach in April, Cochrane blasted a three-run shot in the top of the ninth inning when the Tritons were also down two runs.
In this case, Eckerd still needed to get six more outs, and Achuff did so without much stress. Luis Olivier led off the bottom of the eighth with a single but was erased on a 5-4-3 double play, and Achuff retired the side in order in the ninth.
