Triton Bats Explode in Rout of No. 14 Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - If the Eckerd baseball team was looking to make a statement in Friday night's series opener at conference leader Embry-Riddle, then a statement was clearly made.

The Tritons pounded a season-high 21 hits and tied a season watermark with 18 runs in a dominant 18-3 win over the No. 14 Eagles at Sliwa Stadium on Friday night.

Mitch Calandra fueled the explosion with three homeruns and eight RBIs as part of a 5-for-7 performance.

His first blast, a three-run shot, came in the third inning to give EC a 4-1 lead. From there, the Tritons scored in every inning on the way to the convincing win.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 18, Embry-Riddle 3
WP: McCollough (7-0)  LP: Carrell (2-1)  HR: Glover (7), Calandra 3 (4)
Records: Eckerd 22-13 (11-8 SSC); Embry-Riddle 22-13 (11-5 SSC)

KEY MOMENTS
  • After both teams were held scoreless in the first, Justin Glover got Eckerd on the board with a one-out solo homerun in the second.  ERAU loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the inning on three straight singles, but only managed one run as Dillon McCollough worked out of the jam.
  • Nick Conti and Garrett Hiott opened the third with singles, setting the table for Calandra to bring them in with the first of his three homers. It helped chase Eagle starter J.C. Carrell and get into their bullpen early in the series.
  • Embry-Riddle took advantage of two Triton errors in the third to score a run and cut the deficit to 4-2.
  • Calandra drove in another run in the fourth with a two-out single and Eckerd tacked on three more in the fifth thanks to a pair of wild pitches that allowed runs to score and a RBI single by Conti to take an 8-2 lead
  • McCollough cruised through the third through seventh innings, holding the Eagles scoreless and staying out of trouble. Calandra knocked his second homer of the game in the top of the seventh, this one a solo shot, to make it a 10-2 Triton lead.
  • Eckerd continued rolling in the final two innings scoring three in the eighth and five in the ninth, highlighted by another three-run Calandra blast.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • According to available information and the memory of longtime Triton baseball coach Bill Mathews, Calandra is the first player in recorded program history to drive in eight runs in a game. He is the first player to hit three homers in a game since Joe Dabah did it on February 28, 2009.  His three homers tied for the most by an SSC player this season; his eight RBIs were the most by a conference batter.
  • In their last two games, the Tritons have tallied 40 hits and scored 35 runs.
  • McCollough struck out nine over eight innings, eclipsing the 100 mark for the second straight season increasing his SSC-leading total to 105. He joins Joey Cuda as the only two players in program history to record two 100-strikeout seasons.
  • All nine starters recorded at least one hit. Conti and Hiott had three each while Sam Cochrane, Chase Achuff, Nick Arrivo, and Mitch Donofrio each had two. Glover reached base safely four times thanks to drawing three walks.
  • The win moved Eckerd into a tie for third place in the SSC standings with Tampa at 11-8.
