SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Eckerd softball team tried to avoid a sweep on Saturday at Saint Leo, rallying to tie the finale in the seventh inning but lost to a two-out single in the eighth as the Lions won both ends of a doubleheader.
Saint Leo exploded early in the first game of the day with 10 runs in the first three innings. Eckerd responded by taking a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning of game two only to see the Lions tie it in the fourth and take the lead in the sixth.
Nikole Van Gennep's two-out RBI single in the seventh tied the game and sent it into extra innings, but SLU won it with a walkoff single in the eighth.

KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
- The Lions put two runs on the board in the first inning, both coming on a sacrifice fly. Kendyl Crean's fly ball to right field allowed the first run to tag and score, and another came in after an error on a throw home.
- Saint Leo blew the game open in the second with six runs, all of which came with two outs. Six straight baserunners reached, highlighted by a bases-loaded double by Crean.
- Two more runs crossed for SLU in the bottom of the third on a long play that started with a squeeze bunt. One run scored on the bunt while aggressive baserunning led to an Eckerd throwing error and another run coming across.
- Eckerd fought to stay alive in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on RBIs by Nikole Van Gennep and Skylar Redish with two outs before the Lions recorded the final out to complete the run-rule victory.
Game 2
- Van Gennep was able to keep Saint Leo off the board in the early innings, and Redish's two-run homer in the third gave EC a 2-0 lead.
- The Lions tied the game in the fourth when a single and an error allowed Crean to score from first followed by a squeeze bunt laid down by Kayleice Hooks.
- Crean came through again in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homerun to put SLU ahead, 3-2.
- Eckerd responded to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Avery Wakefield singled to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a two-out RBI single by Van Gennep.
- Ally Costa led off the top of the eighth with a single but didn't advance past first. The Lions then won in the bottom of the inning on a two-out single by Sarah Pauscher to score Ashley Morris from second.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- Redish's homer in the second game was her fifth of the season.
- None of the three games in the series went a regulation seven innings.
- The finale was the fifth extra-innings game for the Tritons this season; they are 1-4 in those games with ending in the eighth.
- Van Gennep went 3-for-4 in the finale to raise her batting average to .330.
