Pitchers' Duel Ends With Walkoff Win for Rollins in Opener

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Dillon McCollough tossed a two-hitter over nine innings, but the Rollins combination of Cameron Enck and Jimmy Robbins kept Eckerd from scoring and gave the Tars the opportunity to score a walkoff win in the 13th inning in Friday night's series opener at Alfond Stadium.

In a pitchers' duel, the Tars finally broke through after loading the bases with nobody out and bringing the winning run home via a sacrifice fly.

The Tritons had numerous chances but ended up stranding 12 runners on base.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Rollins 1, Eckerd 0 (13 innings)
WP: Robbins (3-2)  LP: Favetta (3-3)
Records: Eckerd 16-10 (7-6 SSC); Rollins 15-9 (3-4 SSC)

KEY MOMENTS
  • After two runners reached in the second and one in the third, McCollough became untouchable. He retired 20 straight batters from the third through ninth innings.
  • Eckerd had good opportunities to score in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Chase Achuff and Nick Arrivo had back-to-back two-out singles to put runners on the corners but Cameron Enck got out of the inning. In the fifth, two Rollins errors helped load the bases with one out but the Tars escaped via a double play.
  • The Tritons threatened again in the 10th after a pair of walks to Nick Conti and Garrett Hiott with one out put runners at first and second.  Rollins reliever Jimmy Robbins, however, ended the threat with a strikeout and a lineout.
  • Working in relief, Joey Favetta picked up where McCollough left off in his first three innings, striking out six and allowing only one hit.
  • An error and two walks loaded the bases for the Tars in the bottom of the 13th, setting the stage for Sam LaFontaine's sacrifice fly to bring in the winning run.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • McCollough's ERA dipped to 1.45 after throwing nine shutout innings.  He took a no-decision in the game, his third of the season.  He also struck out nine to push his conference-leading total to 79.

  • It was also the longest game for a Triton team since February 21, 2015, which also took place at Rollins. Eckerd won in 14 innings, 5-4.
