Conti's Clutch Hits Propel Eckerd Over Northwood

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Nick Conti delivered a pair of clutch two-out hits, first tying the game in the seventh and then walking off the game in the ninth as Eckerd rallied to defeat Northwood (Mich.) on Thursday at the Turley Athletic Complex.

The Tritons trailed until the bottom of the seventh when Conti, entering as a pinch-hitter, ripped a two-out double to drive in two runs and tie the game at 4-4. Two innings later, he capped a two-out rally lofting a single over the shortstop's head and bringing in Jake Romine from second base with the winning run.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 5, Northwood 4
WP: Lanzilli (2-1)  LP: Gwizdala (0-1)  HR: Cochrane (1)
Records: Eckerd 14-8; Northwood 11-5

KEY MOMENTS
  • It only took four batters for the Timberwolves to score. A pair of one-out walks put two aboard for Colin McClelland, who brought both runners home via a double to left center.
  • Sam Cochrane led off the bottom of the second with a solo homerun, his first of the season. Chase Achuff and Nick Arrivo followed with two deep fly balls that were caught at the warning track.
  • Northwood got the run back in the third on a two-out RBI double by Nick Palmer.
  • Eckerd answered with a run in the fourth after the first two batters were retired. Cochrane legged out an infield single and, after Achuff drew a walk, came around to score on a single by Arrivo.
  • The Timberwolves got another two-out RBI double in the fifth, this one from McClelland, to take a 4-2 lead.
  • The Tritons went down in order in the fifth and sixth innings before Achuff led off the seventh with a single. Mitch Donofrio extended the inning with a two-out single on a hit-and-run to put runners at the corners. Conti then entered as a pinch hitter and drove a 2-2 pitch off the fence in right-center to clear the bases and tie the game.
  • Northwood's Keaton Sackett blasted a pitch leading off the top of the sixth headed over the fence in right center, but Cochrane robbed him by reaching over the top of the fence and making the catch.
  • Cameron Lanzilli came on in relief in the top of the eighth, retiring six of seven batters in the next two innings.
  • Eckerd again rallied from the bottom of the order with two outs in the ninth. Arrivo got aboard with a one-out single and was replaced by pinch-runner Romine. After a strikeout, Donofrio reached on an infield single to set the stage for Conti. After taking the first two pitches out of the zone, the senior lofted a soft line drive over the head of McClelland at shortstop into centerfield, giving Romine plenty of time to beat the throw home.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Cochrane's homerun was his first since March 3 of last year.
  • The walkoff win was Eckerd's first since March 26 of last year when Garrett Hiott scored from second on an error against Keiser (Fla.).
  • Conti recorded his first career hit as a pinch-hitter.
  • Lanzilli and Tyler Schlegel combined for four scoreless innings of relief.
  • Cochrane, Arrivo, Donofrio, and Conti each had two hits.
