Tritons Rally in 10th, Win Conference Opener

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - An eighth-inning single by Nick Conti tied the game and a four-run 10th inning did the rest as the Eckerd baseball team won its eighth straight game, defeating Palm Beach Atlantic in the Sunshine State Conference opener on Friday night.

The Tritons fell behind, 3-0, after four innings but Dillon McCollough and Joey Favetta held the Sailfish scoreless for the rest of the game, giving the offense time to mount a comeback.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 7, Palm Beach Atlantic 4 (10 innings)
Records: Eckerd 9-3 (1-0 SSC); Palm Beach Atlantic 4-6 (0-1 SSC)
WP: Favetta (2-1)  LP: Hennessey (0-2)

KEY MOMENTS
  • Palm Beach Atlantic took advantage of a two-out error by Mitch Donofrio at third base, which allowed Brandon Seltzer to score from third.
  • Three straight Sailfish hits to open the bottom of the fourth ended with a two-run single by Connor Rowland to put PBA ahead, 3-0. McCollough retired the next three batters, however, to get out of the inning.
  • A pair of walks to Donofrio and Chase Achuff helped set the stage for Mitch Calandra to deliver a two-out, two-RBI double to plate Eckerd's first runs. Sam Cochrane followed with a walk to put the go-ahead run on base, but Heath Hawkins entered in relief and stranded both.
  • McCollough more or less cruised through the next four innings while keeping Palm Beach Atlantic scoreless. He stranded two Sailfish in the bottom of the fifth and left a runner at third in the seventh.
  • Cochrane reached via a double in the top of the eighth. Conti, the next batter, then drove him in with a single to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Eckerd threatened in the ninth putting two runners aboard with one out, but Joey Hennessey got a strikeout and a fly ball to get out of the jam. The Sailfish then put the winning run in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the ninth before Favetta left him stranded.
  • The Tritons loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the 10th. After Hennessey coaxed a pop-up for the first out, he walked Bryan Torres to bring in the winning run. Donofrio followed with a run-scoring single before Keith Leavitt, Jr., also drew a bases-loaded walk. Chase Achuff then plated the fourth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
  • Favetta then closed the door, striking out the side in the bottom of the 10th.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • McCollough allowed nine hits and two earned runs through eight innings, striking out six. Favetta allowed one hit and fanned five in the last two innings.
  • Achuff, Calandra, and Conti each had two hits. Garrett Hiott's single in the 10th extended his hitting streak to six and his on-base streak to 13.
  • Favetta extended his scoreless inning streak to nine after two scoreless frames tonight.
  • McCollough now has 294 career strikeouts, ranking second all-time at Eckerd.
