Tritons Fall to Shorter in Extra Innings on Opening Day

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Visiting Shorter (Ga.) scored four runs in the 11th inning, breaking a 2-2 deadlock to spoil opening day for the Eckerd baseball team on Friday at the Turley Athletic Complex.

In a pitchers' duel, Eckerd tied the game in the eighth and had the winning run at second base in the ninth but couldn't get it across.

The Hawks later broke through in the 11th with four runs on three hits and Eckerd was retired in order in the bottom of the inning.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Shorter 6, Eckerd 2 (11 innings)
Records: Eckerd 0-1; Shorter 1-0
WP: Jerry Liang (1-0)  LP: Chase Achuff (0-1)

KEY MOMENTS
  • After both teams were held scoreless for the first three innings, the Tritons struck first in the bottom of the fourth. Garrett Hiott drew a leadoff walk, then stole second with two outs setting to stage for Achuff to drive him in with a two-out single up the middle on a full count.
  • Dillon McCollough, meanwhile, was cruising into the fifth before he allowed a two-out solo home run by Michael Avendano to tie the game.
  • The Hawks scored again with two outs in the top of the sixth after an error helped keep the inning alive. The Tritons had a chance to double off Matt Christian at second base after Achuff snagged a line drive off the bat of Joshua Meyers, but the throw was wild and Christian moved to third. Following an intentional walk to Samyr Santos, Nathan Butterworth lined the ball off McCollough's leg to score Christian with the go-ahead run.
  • Eckerd put the first two batters aboard in the seventh but came up empty.  The Tritons then loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth and pushed across the tying run on a grounder by Achuff.  Achuff's hustle down the line allowed the run to score as he beat out a potential inning-ending double play.
  • Jarid Salisbury and Cam Lanzilli worked scoreless relief outings before Achuff took the mound for the first time in his college career in the ninth. He got a double-play to escape the ninth and tossed a scoreless 10th but Shorter finally got to him in the 11th.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • McCollough received a no-decision, going 5-2/3 innings and striking out 11.  It was the eighth game in his career with 10 or more strikeouts.
  • All six of Eckerd's hits were singles. No player had more than one hit.
  • Hiott reached base safely in three of his five plate appearances with a single and two walks.
