ROME, Ga. - Two days after suffering an overtime loss at home, the Eckerd men's soccer team went on the road for the first time in the 2018 season and used strong defense to secure a 1-0 win over Shorter (Ga.) University.
HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 1, Shorter 0
Records: Eckerd 2-1, Shorter 0-3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Eckerd controlled possession for much of the first half and fired 11 shots, but was not able to place one in the back of the net.
- The theme for the second half was much of the same. The Tritons still couldn't slip a shot past Hawks keeper Seth Allen until the 72nd minute. Â Eckerd won a corner kick, and Shorter was whistled for a foul as the ball was in play. It gave EC a set piece from just outside the box, where Juan David Tejada deftly placed the ball in the upper right corner.
- The Tritons kept the pressure on taking six more shots over the remainder of regulation while limiting the Hawks to only one equalizing opportunity.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- Goalkeeper David Ormiston made his Eckerd debut with a clean sheet, stopping the only shot on frame that he faced in the match.
- Eckerd dominated possession, taking 24 shots to just six for Shorter. The Tritons placed 11 shots on goal.
- Tejada's goal was the 18th of his career, moving him into a tie for 10th all-time in Eckerd program history.
QUOTABLE
"Today was a hard place to play between the surface and the midday heat, but we had a very strong performance. Â We managed the tempo better, the game was nowhere near as transitional as Saturday, and we got the goal we deserved for all our chances and pressure." - EC head coach
Ian Cameron.
