Lebron Stymies Tritons as No. 2 Tampa Wins Opener

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd baseball team battled for seven innings against the University of Tampa on Friday night at the Turley Athletic Complex, but the No. 2 Spartans scored seven times in the final two innings for a 9-0 win in the series opener.

Tampa starter David Lebron, the 2017 SSC Pitcher of the Year, held Eckerd to four hits over eight innings of work before giving way to Cole Aker in the ninth.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Tampa 9, Eckerd 0
Records: Eckerd 22-25 (10-18 SSC); Tampa 36-7 (24-1 SSC)

KEY MOMENTS
  • Tampa scored runs in the second and third innings, both with two outs, to take a 2-0 lead through three innings.
  • Spartan starter David Lebron's efficiency made things difficult for the Eckerd offense.  The Tritons stranded two runners in the third and left Mitch Calandra stranded at third base in the fourth inning after Calandra opened the inning with a single.
  • EC also saw baserunners erased in the fifth and sixth innings, one on a double play and the other caught stealing.
  • Tampa threatened in the seventh putting two runners on with no outs, eventually chasing Dillon McCollough.  Jared Salisbury got Eckerd out of the jam in relief via an inning-ending double play.
  • UT blew the game open in the late innings, scoring twice in the eighth and five times in the ninth after a two-out error extended the final inning.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • McCollough struck out six batters, bringing his season total to 113.  Barring a relief appearance tomorrow, he will end the year ranking third in program history in single-season strikeouts.
  • The Tritons were shut out for the first time all season.
  • Nick Conti went 3-for-4, accounting for three of the team's five base hits.
  • Lebron was fantastic for the Spartans, throwing just 86 pitches in eight innings of work while striking out nine.
UP NEXT
The two teams wrap up the series on Saturday with a double-header beginning at 3:00 PM. Eckerd's senior day will preceed the opening game at 2:30 PM.  The two games will be the final contests of the year for the Tritons.
