KEY MOMENTS
- The Warriors took an early lead thanks to a two-out, two-run homerun by Jesse Coleman in the first inning.
- WIU extended its lead to 3-0 in the third without recording a hit. The Warriors instead drew three walks and scored on a Coleman sacrifice fly.
- Eckerd got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Bryan Torres, driving in Keith Leavitt, Jr. who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
- The Tritons tacked on another run in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Garrett Hiott to bring in Achuff, but Leavitt, Jr. was cut down at the plate attempting to score the tying run.
- An error by Webber third baseman Chris Medina allowed the tying run to score in the sixth.
- The Triton bullpen was able to work out of jams in the sixth and eighth innings. WIU loaded the bases with one out in the sixth against Brandon Castle before the freshman coaxed a double play grounder to end the inning. Â In the eighth, the Warriors had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, but Jack Iervolino retired the next three hitters including the last two on strikeouts.
- Eckerd took the lead in the top of the eighth with three runs, two of which came on an Achuff single for his third hit of the game. Â Hiott added an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-3.
- The Warriors loaded the bases with one out in the ninth against Kevin Kane to bring the winning run to the plate. Â However, Eckerd got a key defensive play from Hiott in centerfield as he turned a would-be base hit by Brett Kaminski into a fielder's choice when he threw out the runner headed to second. Â Kane then struck out the final batter of the game.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- Achuff pushed his hitting streak to 23 games with his single in the first inning. Â It's now the longest Eckerd hitting streak since current head coach Josh Beauregard hit safely in 24 straight games in 2003.
- Kane earned his second save of the week, both against Webber. Â The Tritons used a total of eight pitchers in the game with Gardner Nutter, Robin Allen, Castle, Joey Favetta, and Iervolino all tossing scoreless innings. Â Favetta picked up the win with a scoreless seventh.
- Leavitt, Jr. swiped his 16th base of the season, putting him in fourth place in the conference in that category.
