Moccasins Erupt in Late Innings, Spoil Tritons' Home Opener

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Trailing 3-2 at the end of six innings in their home opener on Tuesday, the Eckerd baseball team seemed to be in a fine position to have a chance to defeat Florida Southern.

The Mocs, however, exploded for 11 runs over the next two innings, turning a close contest into a 14-2 win to spoil Eckerd's first game of the season at the Turley Athletic Complex.

After scoring three runs in the third, FSC's bats were silenced over the next four innings by the tandem of Joey Favetta and Kevin Kane, but Eckerd's pitchers struggled with control in the next two frames.

Meanwhile, the Tritons had chances early against Mocs starter Thomas Spinelli but were not able to capitalize.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Florida Southern 14, Eckerd 2
Records: Florida Southern 4-0, Eckerd 2-2
WP: Martin (1-0)  LP: Castle (0-1)  HR: Leavitt, Jr. (1)

KEY MOMENTS
  • The Tritons were on the verge of a big inning in the bottom of the first, loading the bases with no outs after back-to-back hits by Sam Cochrane and Garrett Hiott and a walk drawn by Nick Conti.  Mitch Calandra brought in Cochrane with an RBI groundout but, after a walk to Santos Grande loaded the bases again, Spinelli struck out the next two hitters to leave the bases loaded.
  • Freshman Brandon Castle, getting his first collegiate start, loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second.  Though he came close to escaping the inning unscathed, the Mocs' Dylan Costa was too fast for Eckerd to complete a potential inning-ending double play and Cody Burgess came through with a two-out, two-run single to give Florida Southern a 3-1 lead.
  • After neither team scored for the next four innings, Leavitt, Jr. lofted a two-out solo home run over the left field fence to bring EC within a run.
  • The Mocs answered with four runs in the top of the seventh, the first two coming on a two-run home run by Vaun Brown.  It got worse in the eighth for Eckerd as FSC scored seven more runs.  Seven batters reached by either walk, error or hit-by-pitch in the eighth.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • The Tritons used seven pitchers in the game.  Kane worked two perfect innings in the fifth and sixth while Favetta retired six in a row after allowing a leadoff single in the third.  Gardner Nutter got Eckerd out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and tossed a scoreless ninth.
  • The Mocs had only two more hits (8) than did Eckerd, but drew eight walks and were hit by a pitch four times.  Seven of those runners came around to score.
  • Cochrane went 2-for-4, recording a hit for the fourth straight game and raising his early-season average to .467.  Hiott also extended his hitting streak to four games.
UP NEXT
The Tritons travel again for a weekend series, this time to Spring Hill (Ala.) for a pair of seven-inning double-headers on Saturday and Sunday.
