MELBOURNE, Fla. – Eckerd College women's tennis freshmen
Erika Fridrik and
Taylor Bullock continued their strong showings at the Florida Tech-hosted Panther Invitational, setting themselves up for a chance at third after singles draws were sorted out on Saturday.
Fridrik breezed through her 11 a.m. first-round flight to highlight Pool A play, 6-1, 6-2, before being edged out by Florida Tech's Katarina Huba for the right to play in the championship final.
Fridrik is pitted against Palm Beach Atlantic University's Vicky Baca at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
After contributing to a pair of doubles victories in Friday's action with teammate
Carson Trapp, Bullock was on the winning end again to start her day in Pool C, earning a quick 6-1, 6-1 decision.
Bullock was on the reverse end of nearly the same score in the semifinals and a pair of Florida Tech Panthers will be playing in the championship final. She will compete for third against PBA's Vilja Vahatalo.
Another freshman,
Amy Naula, notched a consolation win to earn a bid for the fifth-place matchup in Pool B. Trapp is also in the same bracket playing for seventh.
Gipson Hawn, like Naula, was able to claim a win in the bounceback bracket to set herself for a chance to earn fifth-place honors. Hawn edged out GSW's Victoria Ondo, 6-2, 7-6.
Stephanie Jenks completed the trio of Tritons playing for fifth on Sunday, successfully rebounding from an opening-round loss against Vahatalo. She made quick work of Jessica Rigdon (GSW) by scores of 6-1, 6-3.
