  • Dale Layer (1978-80) was a two-year basketball standout at Eckerd College. Layer still holds the single-season assist record with 211 points handed out in the 1978-79 season. He dished out 186 more points the following year and ranks fifth all-time in school history despite playing only two years.
  • After his time as a player, he went on to work as an assistant coach for five years under longtime basketball coach and Director of Athletics Jim Harley.
  • Layer graduated from Eckerd in 1980 with his degree in Psychology. He later obtained his Master's degree in Counseling from Eastern Kentucky University in 1983 while also serving as the graduate assistant coach.
  • He then served as the head coach of the men's basketball program at Colorado State University for a seven-year span and has worked his way up the ladder to remain at the Division I level in the college landscape.
  • Layer was the head men's basketball coach at NCAA Division I Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. for 6 years, and was named the 2010-11 Big South Conference Coach of the Year.
  • Along his trail of coaching experience includes positions at Marquette University and Queen’s University.
  • Layer is also a member of the Queens College Athletic Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C., where he started the basketball program and served as their Athletic Director.
  • From 2016-2017, Layer was selected as the assistant coach of the Greensboro Swarm, a new NBA Development League franchise.
  • Currently, he joined with Mercer University as the assistant coach.
  • Layer is married to Brenda Peterson and they have three children: Valerie, Tim, and Ethan.
