ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - As an advocate for NCAA Div. II athletics, Eckerd College student-athlete and men's basketball player VaShawn “Woody” Taylor has been a recognizable face in a recent video that went viral titled “
My Experience, My Life.”
A junior point guard from Winter Springs, Fla., majoring in International Business, Taylor has helped the Tritons to a 9-4 record to date in the year while starting every game he's appeared in. He has dished out a team-high 40 assists and averages 5.4 points per contest.
But off the court, his impact is just as noticeable.
Taylor is not only the president of the Eckerd Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), but also the Sunshine State Conference's National SAAC representative.
As the SSC's appointed leader, the role allows him to be a voice and present issues in front of the NCAA that are prevalent among Div. II student-athletes. Taylor is a two-time selection to the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
In the video, Taylor details his love for Eckerd College while balancing academics and serving as a member of the basketball team. He also expresses his enjoyment about playing athletics on the collegiate level.
“I love Eckerd; it's a great school,” Taylor says in the video. “The atmosphere is always positive. When I took my visit there, it was just a great spot. I know what I want out of college because I'm going to focus until I get there.”
He closes with an enthusiastic statement and his trademarked smile.
“This is MY experience, MY life and why I chose Division II.”
